Keppel Bay Sailing Academy to provide Clipper Training in Asia
Keppel Corporation today announces its continued commitment to enter the Uniquely Singapore yacht for the next two editions of the Clipper 09-10 and Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Races, and an agreement for Keppel Bay Sailing Academy (KBSA) to provide Clipper Training in Asia.
Keppel Corporation will be the Team Sponsor of the 68-foot yacht and Official Host Port for the Singapore stopover, with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) coming onboard as Team Partner for the Clipper 09-10 Race. This is the third time that both organisations are working closely together for the Clipper Race.
Keppel has also secured the rights to provide part of the required pre-race Clipper Training for participants at the newly established KBSA.
Under the arrangement, KBSA will offer parts A and B of the three-part Clipper Training curriculum at Marina at Keppel Bay. Parts A and B are eight-day courses, covering areas of safety, seamanship and helmsmanship. Participants will learn all aspects of sailing onboard an ocean-racing yacht and become a certified competent member of a race crew. Part C of the Clipper Training will be carried out in Gosport, UK.
Ms Wang Look Fung, General Manager of Keppel Group Corporate Communications, said, “We have found the Clipper experience to be an excellent platform to showcase Singapore and Keppel round the world.
“At Keppel, we focus on sustainability, believing in long-term investments of empowering lives through continuous training and development, and nurturing communities wherever we operate. These are among our core principles that pave the growth of our businesses.
“The newly opened RYA (Royal Yachting Association) accredited Keppel Bay Sailing Academy as an appointed Clipper training centre will make the race more accessible and affordable for Asians and Australians as they can now undergo the required training for the race here in Singapore instead of going to the UK.”
The Keppel Group which sponsored eight employees in the last races will do so again in the next two races as part of its talent development initiatives.
“At Keppel, we not only celebrate this adventure-seeking mindset, we also nurture it and provide opportunities for it to flourish,” said Ms Wang.
Mr Ken Low, Assistant Chief Executive of Brand and Communications at the STB, said, “The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race has successfully brought the Uniquely Singapore brand across the world through the yacht. This has allowed us to successfully showcase Singapore’s unique characteristics and promote Singapore as a must-visit destination. We are glad to come aboard for another year as Race Partner and look forward to setting sail with Keppel once again.”
The Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race will set sail from the Humber, England, on 13 September 2009. Spanning ten months, the race will see the ten strong international Clipper fleet cross five continents and visit 14 ports, including Brazil; Qingdao, China; and California and New York in the USA.
Come January 2010, the fleet of ocean racing yachts, each representing a different international city or country will berth at Marina at Keppel Bay for the Singapore stopover.
Mr William Ward, Chief Executive of Clipper Ventures, said, “Marina at Keppel Bay provided a spectacular setting for our stopover last year and we are looking forward to returning with the Clipper 09-10 fleet. Singapore always provides a unique experience for our crews.
“In addition to the visiting crews and their supporters many of our other Team Sponsors will bring delegations to Singapore in order to forge trade links and do business with companies here.
“Clipper Training sets the standard in ocean racing and the new Keppel Bay Sailing Academy will help us bring our expertise to aspiring ocean racers throughout Asia. We hope we will see many of them competing as crew on Clipper 09-10 and future races.”
Crew recruitment efforts led by Clipper Ventures will commence immediately. Recruitment talks will take place at 7.30pm on Friday, 28 November 2008 and 11am on Saturday, 29 November 2008 at The Island Suite, Marina at Keppel Bay. All are welcome.
