RYA COURSES

I have no sailing experience; can I join any of the courses?
Yes! You may wish to join our 2-day Start Yachting course or 5-day Competent Crew course. No prior experience is required.
I have some sailing experience, which course should I join?
Depending on your level of experience, you may join our Competent Crew conversion course, Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper. Please complete our sailing experience form so that we can better advise you the right courses to join according to your experience and competency.
I do not know how to swim; can I take the practical courses?
Yes! Your safety is important to us and it is our policy to have everyone on board to wear a life jacket when sailing, regardless of your capability to swim. Our life jackets, which are checked periodically and serviced annually, inflate automatically if a person falls overboard.
I have sea-sickness/motion sickness; can I take the practical courses?
Yes. As we are unable to issue sea-sickness medication to you, we recommend that you consult a doctor for your condition or obtain medication from the pharmacy. You may consume the prescription before and/or during the course, according to the advice by the medical professionals. There are also acupressure bands that you could purchase from pharmacies which some students find helpful.
I am pregnant; can I take the practical courses?
We are not able to accept pregnant ladies on our practical courses due to safety reasons unless a medical doctor provides a written certification that you are fit to sail.
What is the minimum age to join a course?
The minimum age is 12 years old for our practical courses, and 16 years old for our theory courses. Students below 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult guardian who is also taking the course.
How many students do you accept per course?
We take in a maximum of 5 students per boat for our practical courses. They will share 3 cabins between them. For our classroom theory courses, we accept a maximum of 8 students. Our other short courses have varied numbers depending on the course requirements.
How many people do you need to start a course?
We need at least 4 students for all the RYA courses, except the First Aid and Radar courses which require 3 students as a minimum.
I live nearby; can I go home in the evenings during the practical courses?
Our practical courses are all live-a-boards, hence all students will not be able to go home for the duration of the course. This is part of the RYA requirements to allow students to gain a full experience of sailing and living onboard. Cabins, shower facilities and food are available to the convenience of all students.
Is food provided for the course?
Yes, breakfast and lunch will be provided for all practical courses. Dinner will be onshore at your own cost for Start Yachting, Competent Crew and Day Skipper Practical courses. Dinner will be provided only when there is a night sail, and for the entire Coastal Skipper Practical course. All ingredients will be supplied for the meals and all students will take turns preparing, cooking and cleaning up onboard. Snacks and fruit will also be available.

For all other shorebased courses, only light snacks, coffee and tea are provided during tea breaks. Students will have to arrange their own meals.

I have strict dietary requirements, are you able to cater for it?
Do inform us if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions in advance, prior to starting your course. We will try our best to provide ingredients or meals to suit your dietary requirements; however, it is recommended that you bring some of your own food to supplement.
How much are the course fees?

I have booked for a course, what should I bring or prepare?
For our practical courses, pack your gear in a soft collapsible bag, not a suitcase or trolley bag as there’s limited storage space onboard. Please refrain from bringing/wearing jewellery/rings while you’re on course. These are our recommendations for practical courses :

  • Sunglasses & caps
  • Towel & toiletries
  • Sun block (please do not use spraying type as it makes the deck slippery)
  • Insect repellent
  • Quick dry trousers (preferably not jeans)
  • Shorts (no buckles or zippers on back pocket), t-shirts (summer sailing, collared long sleeved tees to prevent sun burn), undergarments
  • Sandals/slippers/deck shoes (non-marking soles) for shore use
  • Notebook and pen
  • Water bottle
  • Shower bag (for carrying items from boat to shower area in marina)
  • Personal medication (if you are under medication treatment)
  • Sailing gloves (available for sale at our reception)
  • Sleeping bag & pillow

For our shorebased courses, do bring a notebook and pen.
It is highly recommended to collect your course materials from us beforehand so that you can do some self-study prior to the course. For more information, please call us at +65 6303 8452 or email us at enquiry@kbsa.com.sg.

What if the weather turns bad during the practical course?
The instructor will ensure the safety of the students onboard and decide the next steps if it is safe to proceed. For situations such as rain without thunderstorm, we will provide wet weather gear for students if they did not bring any of their own.
Can you conduct the courses on my yacht?
Yes, with the condition that our instructors are satisfied that your yacht is sea-worthy and equipped with the necessary safety equipment to be able to conduct the full syllabus. We can conduct courses on both sailing and motor yachts. We accept a minimum of 2 students and maximum of 5 students per RYA course. We are also able to provide customised training on an ad hoc basis or for familiarisation of your new yacht and sailing ground (without RYA certification). For more information, call us at +65 6303 8452  or email us at enquiry@kbsa.com.sg.
Will I be certified at the end of the course?
Upon successful completion of the course and the instructor is satisfied that you have met the required standards, you will be awarded the internationally-recognised RYA certificate of the course you enrolled in. The instructor will debrief the students regularly to ensure that they are aware of their progress for further improvements during the course. If the student is unable to meet the required standards at the end of the course, he/she will be given an action plan and may be required to repeat the course again partially or fully.
What can we do with the certificate?
With Start Yachting and Competent Crew certificates, you will be able to crew for other boats and assist the skipper. If you complete the Day Skipper shorebased and practical courses, you may be able to do a bareboat charter to skipper on your own. Please note that some charter companies may require the Coastal Skipper certification for bareboat charter.
I wish to charter a yacht after the course.
You can contact us for yacht charter availability and rates, at +65 6303 8452 or email us at charters@kbsa.com.sg. We do not provide bareboat charters and our skippers will be onboard for all charters to ensure safety. You will be able to practice all the skills you have acquired during the charter. If you wish to charter a yacht elsewhere, there may be a minimum requirement of Day Skipper certification.
I want to do more sailing after the course, what should I do?
KBSA has a Simply Sailing programme for our students to practice what they have learnt. It is a 4-hour sail either between 9am – 1pm or 2pm – 6pm on selected weekends once a month. We also run Sailing Clinics periodically for you to practice your boat handling skills. For more information, call us at +65 6303 8452 or email us at enquiry@kbsa.com.sg. We may help to pass on your contact to boat owners looking for a crew. You can also rent a dinghy from Constant Wind to practise your sailing.
